The Battle of Banquan may actually refer only to the third of a series of three battles. The Yellow Emperor shortly afterwards fought Chiyou at the Battle of Zhuolu. Both battles were fought not long apart and on nearby plains, and both involved the Yellow Emperor. Some scholars have concluded they may have been the same battle. Not much is known about this battle since it, along with other events of the era, is clouded by mythology, and its historical accuracy is disputed.

The Battle of Banquan is significant as the event that led to the alliance of the Youxiong and Shennong tribes, forming the Yanhuang tribe. This tribe then expanded and eventually became the Huaxia civilization, the precursor of the Han Chinese civilization. To this day, Chinese people call themselves 'the Descendants of Yan and Huang.' The battle is also notable for being the first large-scale battle in Chinese history, with the Yellow Emperor's armies using totems of the black bear, brown bear, pixiu, and tigers. The location of Banquan remains disputed, with three likely sites, though Xiezhou county in Shanxi is considered most probable. Some historians propose that the battles of Banquan and Zhuolu were actually the same battle, and that the Flame Emperor was the same person as Chiyou.
